Poetry Is (2017)

Video

3:13

This piece was a conversation about attaching words to cathartic feelings. I have artistically documented an art installation in October of 2017; I set up a camera and provided strangers with a series of intimate questions (When was the last time you cried? What are you afraid of?) to answer in front of the camera. This piece is an exploration of vulnerability and putting words to wordless feelings. This vulnerability parallels the medium of poetry, which is difficult to define, but powerful enough to crack you open. The installation was an artistic experience between me and my interviewees– a poetic ebb and flow that took on a life of its own. A wordless poetry, the feeling after you cry, this video emulates a catharsis and an exploration of its opposite, a void.

you want vs i want (timing) (2018)

Slide film projection, video documentation

3:00

This installation, a slide film projection, is a dance. Two rolls of the same slide film presented in unison, but in opposite directions. It is the familiar play between two lovers, soulmates, failing to line up perfectly. It’s about when the love’s right but the timing isn’t. The installation was a failure to meet in the middle, being both “within and without” (Gatsby) and a beautiful dance to stick it out till the end.

everyone will remember everyone will remember everyone will remember (2017)

Video

:44

My concept with this video was the preservation of memory through photography. I used the “on hold” recording from a photography shop in juxtaposition with symbols of historic photo preservation, as well as memories from history that are preserved in tragic still-frames. I’m playing on the concept of memory and trauma, and the tight grip we have on revisiting history.

plsmakeithomesafe (2017)

Video projection installation, video documentation

:26

This video projection installation is in response to the tragedy of not being able to save someone. The defeated red rose hangs upside down, with the words “please make it home safe” flashing beside it. My hands are washing themselves clean– or, trying to wash themselves clean– of the guilt associated with feeling like you didn’t do enough to save someone. This projection was a part of a series of projections, all displaying the words “please make it home safe,” projected at night.

Escapism (2018)

Video with sound

3:01

This is a video and sound piece that captures me on a reckless chase; running to escape stagnation was my inspiration for this piece. The video speaks about escapism and the ways in which I shake things up to create meaningful experiences for myself. The video creates a feeling of uneasiness; the glitching makes it difficult to sit through the whole video without feeling uncomfortable, and this was intentional. I wanted the viewers to feel as restless as me. The sound is coming from two different places: there is audio of me panting on the run, and also audio of me aggressively self-expressing on my typewriter. I write poetry for erratic release. The manic nature of the sound in this piece captures my desire to release. All in all, this video explores the uncomfortable feeling of restlessness, and thus my need to self-express my way out of the liminal space.

i said, no electronics in the bedroom (2017)

Video projection installation, video documentation

1:25

This video projection was a part of my series of Bedroom Installations, in which I created a world within four walls that presented itself as both a private space and an exhibition. This installation is an aggressive co-collaboration with the song Celestica by the electronic band Crystal Castles, soonly after news was released about Alice Glass leaving the band due to a career-full of abuse from her co-founder Ethan Kath. Bringing violence into the bedroom, mixing work and play, and the relationship between art and pain are all themes I explore in this installation. The need to sleep with your eyes open inspired this piece..

The Raven (2018)

Video

2:38

In this remix of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, I used a glitched video to depict two lovers, and self destruction in the pursuit of unattainable love. The format creates a chilling deconstruction of language, both visually and audibly, internalizing the haunting nature of a toxic, fruitless chase. Visually capturing Poe’s insanity and haunting memories of his lover, I break down his elaborate language to a violent hurling of manic self-expression. Like a glitched screen, no harmony can be found here.
